The hotel industry has often been accused of being negligent in the security of its guests. Negligent security claims have resulted in courts ruling that the hotel industry take a responsibility for the safety and security of their patrons. Security is one of the most important issues confronting the hotel industry today.

Providing Reasonable Care, by Jesse Denton

Hotels are expected to provide reasonable care to ensure that guests have a safe and secure stay. Reasonable care includes a sturdy door, which closes and latches and locks, on the guestrooms' entrance. When working in a guestroom, take note to be sure the door lock, swing bar or chain secondary locking devices and the viewer are all securely in place and in good operating condition. Report any irregularities to your manager or engineering so necessary repairs can be implemented. Room attendants at many hotels have maintenance work request forms on their carts. A very good idea for having repairs completed quickly. However, hazards posing an imminent threat to the safety or security of the guests should be handled even more quickly with a call or verbal report to a manager or supervisor.
