Growing Concepts  

Concepts that have grown by at least 5% (if less than 50 units). 

Carpinteria, CA-based CKE RESTAURANTS INC (founded 1941) has increased by 43 units for the Carl’s Jr concept, from 1249 to 1292 (3% concept growth) and by 18 units for the Hardee’s concept, from 1899 to 1917 (1% concept growth).  Overall company increase was from 3148 to 3209 (2% growth).  These are quick serve burger restaurants, open for lunch and dinner.  Per person price range is $2-$6.  Units seat about 80.  Locations are franchised and trade in AK, AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, DE, FL, GA, HI, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, WV, and WY.  

Destin, FL-based TROPICAL SMOOTHIE CAFÉ (founded 1997) has increased by 2 units, from 296 to 298 (1% growth) and entered into HI and IA.  This is a quick serve juice/smoothie concept, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner hours.  Per person price range is $3-$8.  Catering and online ordering are available.  Units seat around 50.  Stores are franchised and trade in AL, AR, AZ, CA, FL, GA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, NE, NV, NY, OH, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WI, and WV.

EAST BAY DELI of North Charleston, SC has increased by 1 unit, from 4 to 5 (25% growth).  These are family/casual stores with seating for around 50.  Meal periods are breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Beer is served.  Per person check average is around $3-$8.  Catering and delivery services are offered.  All locations are in SC.

EMERIL'S HOMEBASE INC based in New Orleans, LA (founded 1990) has increased by 1 unit, from 12 to 13 (8% growth) adding a new concept called E2 Emeril's Eatery (1).  These are upscale restaurants with full bar and seating for around 225.  Meal periods are lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $15-$50+.  Banquets are offered.  Other concepts are Burgers And More (1), Delmonico Steakhouse (1), Emeril's Chop House (1) , Emeril's Delmonico (1), Emeril's New Orleans Fish House (1), Emeril's Restaurant (3), Emeril's Tchoup Choup (1), Lagasse's Stadium (1), Nola Restaurant (1) and Table 10 (1).Locations are in FL, LA, NC, NV and PA.

FOURTH WALL RESTAURANTS based in New York, NY (founded 2007) has increased by 1 unit, from 6 to 7 (17% growth), adding a new concept called Riff Raff's.  These are upscale steakhouses with full bar and seating for around 300.  Meal periods are lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $15-$50+.  Other company concepts are Maloney & Porcelli (1), Park Avenue (1), Post House (1), Quality Meats (1), Smith & Wollensky (1) and The Hurricane Club (1).  All locations are in NY.

Emerging and Re-emerging Concepts


Concepts with 20 units or less who grew by at least 2 units.

McAllen, Tx-based TAQUERIA EL ZARAPE (founded 1996) has increased by 2 units, from 6 to 8 (33% growth).  The restaurants are quick serve, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is $4-$10, serving beer and wine.  Units seat about 70 and offer catering service.  All locations are in TX

Concepts previously written about in the past 18 months.

Orlando, FL-based FLIPPERS PIZZERIA (founded 1987) has increased by 1 unit, from 10 to 11 (10% growth).  This is a family/casual concept, open for lunch and dinner, with a $6-$12 per person check average.  Beer and wine are served and seating is for around 30.  Catering, delivery, online ordering and private party services are available.  All stores are in FL.  We last featured this concept on 1/18/11 (25% growth).

Salt Lake City, UT-based CAFE RIO (founded 1997) has increased by 5 units, from 41 to 46 (12% growth) and entered into MT, VA, and WY.  These fast casual Mexican restaurants are open for lunch and dinner, with a $4-$10 per person price range.  Units seat about 100 and offer catering and online ordering services.  Trading areas are AZ, CA, CO, ID, MD, MT, NV, UT, VA, and WY.  We featured this concept on 1/25/11 (12% growth) and on 6/28/11 (11% growth).

Cheshire, CT-based JAKE'S WAYBACK BURGERS (founded 1991) has increased by 16 units, from 27 to 43 (59% growth) and entered into OH.  The restaurants are open for lunch and dinner, with a $2-$6 per person price range.  Units seat about 60 and offer catering, delivery, and online ordering.  Locations are franchised and trade in CT, DE, FL, MA, MD, NC, NY, OH, and PA.  We wrote about this concept on 8/31/10 (43% growth), 1/4/11 (15% growth) and 2/22/11 (22% growth).

FREDDY'S FROZEN CUSTARD & STEAKBURGERS based in Wichita, KS has increased by 19 units, from 54 to 73 (35% growth) and expanded into UT and NV.  These are quick serve burger restaurants with seating for around 60.  Meal periods are lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $3-$8.  Drive thru and banquets are offered.  There is a second concept called Timberline Steakhouse (1).  Locations are in AZ, CA, CO, KS, MO, NE, NV, OK, TX and UT.  We last reported on this concept on 6/1/11 (19% growth).
