Franchising and branding continue to be integral parts of the hotel and hospitality landscape, with an estimated 28,200 of the 49,500 hotels (roughly 56%) in the US belonging to a branded or franchised organization. Another calculation projects that an estimated 68%+ of the more than 4,600,000 US hotel rooms1 ( or 3.1 million) are somehow brand affiliated, when management agreements and brand owned and operated hotels are included.

Why are U.S. hotels so attractive to Asian investors?
It seems like every day there is a new article about direct foreign investment in the United States -- particularly Asian or Chinese investment. This swelling wave of capital is largely focused on hotels, and the trend has some important implications. Asian investment accounted for 8 percent of U.S. hotels purchased in 2010, and Jones Lang LaSalle expects that this amount will increase to the low double digits in 2011. The NLRB is making it harder to stay union free. A highly controversial new law, which many employers believe will unfairly foster union organizing, requires that employers post notices of employee rights -- including the right to organize, join or discuss the activities of a union. The law goes into effect on November 14, 2011.Employers must comply with the new rule whether they have a unionized work force or not.

The ability to finance a property may be determined by the availability of an established and successful brand, and the ultimate success of a hotel may depend on the strength of the reservation system, marketing, and other support provided by the hotel brand.
