Risk Management for Social Media Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn have become integral parts of the corporate world. A 2011 survey conducted by the Society of Human Resource Management found that 68 percent of responding organizations are engaged in social media activities designed to reach external audiences, including potential customers. Employees are using social media for company-wide purposes such as marketing, human resources and public relations. Employees also use social media networks for more individualized tasks such as networking and business development, as well as for purely personal reasons. Read more EEOC's Focus on Criminal Background Checks Will Impact the Hotel Industry On April 25, 2012, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) issued updated guidance on the use of criminal background checks in employment titled, Enforcement Guidance on the Consideration of Arrest and Conviction Records in Employment Decisions Under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Commission voted 4-1 to approve the updated guidance which the EEOC has indicated it will use to investigate cases of discrimination related to employer's use of criminal background check policies. Although Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 does not prohibit the use of criminal background checks, the EEOC cited concerns that employers could use arrest and conviction records to unlawfully discriminate against job applicants based on their race or national origin.
