Reflections | WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?

Hotel Common SenseTMReflections | By John Hogan, CHA CHE CMHS

In our over stimulated world of information provided 24/7, it becomes a challenge at times to evaluate much of that information. We were invited by a good friend on a recent US holiday weekend to Pine Top, Arizona which allowed us to escape from the 118 degree temperature of Phoenix and enjoy some quiet time at a cabin. Unfortunately, I did not use all of my time for "quiet time", as I felt the need to work on a deadline project and ended up writing.

Setting that personal "shouldn't have ugh" aside, let me share some personal insights.

July 4th as a day has some special meaning to me.

  1. As an American, July 4th marks Independence Day and the beginning of the United States as a country. We have visited Monticello, the residence of our 3rd President, Thomas Jefferson who passed away there on July 4th, 1826. On this same 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, our 2nd President, John Adams passed away on that same July 4 as Jefferson in Massachusetts, which is the birth state of both me and Kathleen Hogan (HospitalityuEducators.com Publisher)
  2. As a son, July 4th marks what would have been the 77th anniversary of my parent's marriage. Married in 1936 during the American Depression, their marriage lasted for 45 years. We still have some of the wonderful, high quality furniture they acquired.
  3. As a business professional, July 4th marks the anniversary of our hospitality and hotel industry resource web site, www.Hospitalityeducators.com. We launched the site 3 years ago and have already interacted with thousands of people from around the world who have visited our site. Some have become regular members and others have visited the site a number of times to gain insights, best practices and strategies to inmp0rive their profitability.
  4. July 4 also has personal meaning for me, and that is all I will say on that subject except that it brings me a special memory and feeling each year.

I have a section titled ' Reflections" on www.HoganHospitality.com that allows me the opportunity to "reflect" on some of those people who have positively impacted my career. On the 4th, I posted one on Louise Avery of Avery Vermont Inns http://hoganhospitality.com/Reflections.html , whose family had a major impact on my career and profession. I hope you will read it and recall those who impacted your life.

While these reflections will be of people that I have known, I encourage you to think back on the people who contributed to the person you are today.
