The Importance Of Setting Goals – How To Get Them Out Of Your Head And On Paper
Dec 3, 2016
-
When someone decides to create a company, one of the first orders of business is to develop a business plan.
A business plan is a road map, in writing, that serves as the foundation of the business and sets forth the goals and objectives that are projected to be achieved over a five-year period. If a company does a good job at creating and carrying out the plan, the business has a better chance in succeeding as compared to those that don’t.

”Is Hospitality Still a Place for Entrepreneurs?”
Dr. John Hogan, CHE CHA CMHS CHO
This is a non-traditional commissioned year-end column, in that is not a prediction of trends nor is it a list of New Year’s resolutions. I felt honored to have been asked by the editor of one of the world’s best known online publications to consider and share my thoughts on what we want to see more in the new year. I expanded it to include what we want and need in the coming year, which is reflected in the title that asks if hospitality is still the industry that motivates entrepreneurs.

KEYS TO SUCCESS - Managing the Intricate Challenges of Today's Hospitality Leadership
Sep 19, 2016

“Keys for Success” was chosen as the title to this series because I, among many others, have come to realize there is not one stand-alone guide to ongoing achievement. A strong brand and a well-financed hotel in a good location are certainly all very positive factors, but the human touch of delivering hospitality will be the crowning touch to that ongoing success. |

Recommended Reading: A solid planning resource for Succession
Sep 10, 2016

In my work as an educator and consultant, I work with both family businesses of various sizes and with traditional corporate structures.
Each of them have a common need - planning for the future by either growing their own talent or by identifying and addressing their weaknesses them by finding the right professionals to strengthen their businesses. This means active succession planning, which sounds muck easier than it actually is.
I am not fond of the series titled "for Dummies" but some of these books do a credible job at simplifying the approaches needed to address the topic. This is one of them.

HospitalityEducators.com Names Kathleen Hogan as President and CEO
Jul 4, 2016
-
Effective July 4, 2016, the 6th anniversary of its founding, Kathleen Hogan, MBA CHO will assume the role and title of CEO of HospitalityEducators.com. This will include brand strategy and positioning, as HospitalityEducators.com continues to expand opportunities to deliver hospitality learning, professional certifications and problem solving options and vehicles for hotel owners and managers.
“HospitalityEducators.com has evolved from our original services as a membership site to one that provides a broad range of educational services and specific solutions for hotels,” says Hogan. “Almost 80% of the hotels in the US are under 150 rooms. While many of them are branded, an affiliation alone may not be enough for a small business owner to achieve the level of success they are seeking. In the past six years, we have been repeatedly asked to offer recommendations on ways to improve profitability, to increase market share, to improve guest service or to offer personalized training assistance. The site offers valuable information, but the demand for personalized services has determined our need to expand and vary our delivery of knowledge and expertise.”
